In my experience it is ruggedness, not performance capabilities, that made a good Death Valley 4x4. There are no roads in Death Valley National Park that, under normal conditions, that require greater clearance than that provided by any SUV or pickup.

However, the dirt roads in the Park are very rough and bumpy for miles, and miles, and miles... Many SUV's get their bolts rattled out, or experience multiple flat tires, before ever finding a section of impassable road. Plain and simple, the long dirt roads of DVNP will give your suspension and tires a workout like no other region of the desert.

I've seen many 2WD autos that have had little actual trouble on these roads, except that when finished, they rattle like rocks in a tin can!

I recommend getting a 4x4 with solid axles rather than IFS, and a set of really good offroad tires.
