Dan McGraw,
If you scroll down on this website you enjoy so much you’ll see a post with the title, Redlands Canyon Via Manly Falls posted by Frank. Frank, in his innocence, thinks there is a Manly Falls, Dezdan answers that question with a post that provides the cruel truth in the form of a photograph----Manly Falls is long gone.
Manly Falls is gone because Canyon Resources, owner of the Briggs Mine, destroyed it. They destroyed it because that was the only way the low-grade gold ore in the rock of Manly Falls could be mined, cyanide leached, and the gold extracted. If Canyon Resources is able to continue its mining operations they will eventually strip off about ten miles of the western flank of the Panamint Mountains.
At the time the Briggs Mine was first proposed there was controversy, arguments, disagreements, all the arguments people have when changes are proposed. Sometimes those changes are about “conserving” something, the Desert Protection Act, for example. Sometime they are about doing the opposite, as in the case of the Briggs mine. People have different values, different interests, and in a civil society those differences have to be discussed. It is to be hoped that the discussions are civil, but, civil or uncivil, the different views should be presented. A bovine complacency is the last thing we should want.
