We had a somewhat similar experience on the South Pass a few Presidents Day's ago.

A guy with a Chevy Suburban (new one, loaded to the roof and IFS very compressed) was trying to drive out. He stopped to put on chains, but they were the wrong size (they had been for his previous truck) and promptly wrapped them around his disc brakes so thoroughly that we had to jack up his front end and pull the tire off to remove one of the chains. He had friends with him in other vehicles who sat inside with the heater on while we dug him out. He tried to continue on, but the combination of a not-too capable vehicle and inxeperienced driver was not equal to the trail.

So we ended up putting a more experienced driver in the vehicle, and I moved up front in my Range Rover to blaze the trail forward. It was quite an adventure, took us over 5 hours to get to pavement!

I guess he wasn't so bad - he knew he was in over his head and let us help him out. His friends were pretty worthless though - he had been digging himself out without help from them until we came along.

It seems like quite often you run into folks like that who would be in real trouble if someone had not come along.
