Real big bummer of a topic guys! This subject, while possibly important, really depresses me. I've been camping solo (and with family) for 20+ years now (God "I AM" getting older). Yes, there are SOME very bad people out in the Dez...ocationally. and Yes there are MANY very bad people in more public places that You and I frequent on a much more regular basis. I don't carry a gun for the most part out in the boonies but DO pay MUCH attention to my (our) surroundings and adjust my comfort of/for an area based on the presence (or perceived presence of )undesirable neighbors. As for DVNP no problems, but I've also camped solo in Mojave outside Yucca Valley/29 Palms and that area made me think several times about the cannon at home in the locker!?!? I still like mothers little helper (4lbs. bush knife a field hand gave me for fixing his Ford ranger). Please, I hope this thread doesn't dissuade others from the awesome experience of camping alone and with others in the desert... -M
