Hi - I just returned from a great trip to the valley. My companion was coming into DV for the first time, which made the trip extra fun, to show my favorite places to. We spent the first night in the area at the BevLen Haus B&B in Ridgecrest; really nice people! And they fed us well in the morning. The next day, I finally drove the Goler Wash/Mengle pass way into Butte Valley. Glad I had a spotter along; no way would I have gone in alone. But I suppose it wasn't that bad! Unfortunately, I did not get to stay in the lovely Geologists cabin; a bit of a crowd was camped out there. We camped next to the Butte itself. It was a bit hotter than I'd thought it'd be this time of year; but fine by me. The next day, we explored Warm Springs area, and then on to Hanuapah Canyon. It was a bit hot for hiking, but we went up the canyon on foot a ways to the water (we only drove up to the wash drop; not that the road was bad, we just wanted to walk). The next day, was a real treat - Marble canyon. Lovely narrow slot canyon; NO one in sight! We first stopped at the Stovepipe Wells ranger station to ask about conditions. The ranger, Bruce(?) I think was his name, was *really* helpful and down to Earth; nicest ranger I've met in DV. Marble canyon was spectacular! We camped on the side of the road in the truck; we did not see a soul in Marble (everyone else was in Cottonwood canyon 'next door'). A brief visit to the Eureka dunes completed the trip - though we had positively HOWLING wind all night there! More than a few scattered wildflowers were present :) It was fairly 'quiet'; most folks seemed to be in the usual places near Furnace creek and such. -The Desert Dryad
