To get the best maps – join the US Army and ask that you go to schooling (MOS training) for 81T - Topographic Analyst OR if you have a degree, join and become and officer in MI.

Once you graduate, you will have access to all the terrain/geographic satellites you want. On duty or reserve duty, snap digital pictures at will. From that, you can make some of the best maps available.

OR

just pick up the California 189 CD set of terrain information and geographic information (topographic maps made by lasers). With this data, you load it up on your laptop, hook it up to your vehicle, and away you go. (Now the cool thing about this software, you can click on the map for a 3meter digital picture of the terrain or get a 1m accurate 3D model of the terrain and is up to date as of March 2003.)

OR

ask some of your military buddies to install a Trimble X GPS 1pps unit in your vehicle with a 7.5” touch screen LCD monitor for map upload/download capability. Oh yeah, you can email with this unit.

Now, I have never done any of this before ;-)~
