Your cheapest option is to stay in Beatty, Nev. I'd guess they expect to get your cash back in the casinos. It's not in the valley -- neither is Panamint Springs, but it's a nice drive back and forth. You're close to Bullfrog/Rhyolite ghost towns, and the beginning of the Titus Canyon trip into the valley is near there.

Furnace Creek Ranch is "town" in DV, right next to the airport, golf course, museum and other services. Furnace Creek Inn, not far away, is the mega-bucks resort option. The Ranch is something of a zoo, but it's OK. For birders, the area around the ranch -- the golf course and oasis, is a huge attraction in migration. People travel across states to look at what flies in during spring and fall.

We've camped next door from the Ranch at the FC campground. It's OK, but the park service provides NO SHOWERS! This in the hottest park in the system. Showers are available at the FC Ranch pool, but the number of shower slots is limited by edict. Thus, people line up first thing in the morning in a Third World ritual to pay a little cash for the privilege of getting clean. The pool is fed by warm springs and very large and pleasant.

TIP: The person guarding the pool from the unwashed masses splits long before pool hours are over, so evening swims/showers are free to all -- no reservations necessary! Just don't tell anyone ...
