Thanks Zomb, your message was the one I hoped to read some day. In September I camped a few nights in a row in the Butte Valley area, without encountering anyone exept a couple of "government" people. Clearly they were investigating something, but they didn't seem to be interested in me, which I thought was unusual. Their car wasn't marked NPS, so I decided not to become too nosey (I'm not a US Citizen you know). Later at dusk I could smell someones campfire, just for a short moment. There were still wildfires burning at that time, but those were at least 50-80 miles away, and this smelled like a nearby campfire. Like coming from the cabin that was mentioned elswhere in this thread. I figured at that time it must have been some special agent on a desert training mission and he obviously gave himself away to me. The next day or so I hiked up Manly Peak. My clothes were 100% in desert tones, so I think it would have been imposible to spot me from the air. Still a jet-airplane managed to detect me, changed it's course and flew straight over me. This more or less assured me that some sort of exercise was going on in the area, and I realized, had I hiked in Afghanistan, I most certainly would have been turned into dust at that moment.

About three months later with a couple of friends we stopped at the Ballarat Store and heard about the burglary that had just taken place that morning. They suspected a guy that was hiding out in the Panamints. I had my doubts, but it turns out they were right. OK this is going to get interesting...

Hey! Never a dull moment in Butte Valley.
