I think it makes sense to me, in that passing the building from left to right would be going north to south. Just to the right of the building is an intersection -- one can turn west across the playa (toward Trona, Randsburg) or east, but then the main road immediately curves south -- going straight would take you up Pleasant. By going south through Panamint Valley they'd come to Pilot Knob Valley then continue on to Granite Wells. I measured this route on my mapping software and it came to 53 miles, which makes sense 'cause I cut a lot of corners along the way...
PS - Saw Easy Rider on DVD and noted that the first shots of them riding their new bikes was right where the old pic was taken!
