The last official word is that large "commercial" vehicles aren't allowed over the Dam. Motorhomes and trailers are allowed but subject to search several miles before the dam. As for the best route, I'd guess that 160 through Pahrump and then the Belle Vista/Bob Ruud highway is probably the shortest but you do have the climb over Mountain Springs at about 5500 ft.
