I looked into it seriously. To buy photovoltacic cells costs about $4 a watt. The little solar battery charges you see advertised for about $30 are for maintaining batteries not charging them. I ended up buying another deep cycle battery rather than one battery and a solar charger. There is tons on the internet about solar energy.
Basically, you buy a battery, a pv panel, a controller and an inverter. Bingo you are in business. Hope this helps.
