Since you will be retired, I would suggest that you plan your desert travels to be in spring or fall. Many of the most interesting desert areas are also mountainous. The winters are colder than you may enjoy, and the remote roads do not get as frequent maintaince to repair storm damage. Summers are probably too hot most places unless you frequent only the highest elavations.

That being said, if you are willing to travel the back roads there are plenty of places where you will not see many other people.
