I traveled the entire length from Ballarat to the West Side Road in March of this year in a Explorer Sport Trac 4x4. Mengel Pass is out of the question for your 2x2, but approaching Barker Ranch from Ballarat via Goler Wash may be possible in a stock 2x2 SUV with reasonable ground clearance. I too suggest you rent a SUV or pickup, 4x4 if at all possible. Don't risk screwing up your primary vehicle. Choose something hardy, not one of those Suv's based on a car chassis. Mengel Pass was fun, but it wore me out. Suggest you visit Goler Wash & Barker ranch one day (from Ballarat), then visit Warm Springs and Butte Valley another (from West Side Road) and avoid Mengel Pass altogether. Take plenty of time off and enjoy this beautiful place at a slow pace.
