An encounter at Steam Wells.

When I first entered the old school bus that was now the steam room at Steam Wells I had to step very careful in the sudden darkness. I found a bench and sat down. There were narrow shafts of light from the outside and as my eyes became use to the dark I could just see a white naked body stretched out on the bench opposite me. I greeted my new companion and received no response. Trying again, and in a louder voice, I asked how often he (my ability to see was improving) came to Steam Wells. No response. I had noticed another group of people parked near the old school bus when I had arrived at Steam Wells and now with some alarm at the possible condition of my silent companion I ran out of the steam room and asked them if the fellow in the bus was a member of their party. Yes, they said. I told them my concern at the lack of any response from their friend. I was wrapped only in a towel and maybe I was not a very imposing figure, but I didn’t think I deserved the laughter that I was getting from the group of people. They said they would go check on their friend, but they did think there was a problem, he was a deaf mute and had not heard a word I had said.
This was in the days when a Finn had settled at Steam Wells and seemed to take good care of the place. Naturally, he was eventually given the boot.
