About 20 years ago I came across a guy in Rock House Basis, which is loaded with rattlers, who had tried to kill a rattler with a .45 and birdshot. He had a face full of sand and was temporally blinded in one eye. The birdshot had hit the ground and rocks and kicked back debris. I would never shoot anything into the ground near me. Personally I prefer an 18" machette.
