Chief Joseph and White Swan? I must be getting confuzzled in my dotage. Speaking of confuzzled, Chief Joseph came through the area north of Cody in 1877, and he confuzzled the U.S. Army real good.

Back to the Department of Interior, some of the best times of my 20's were spent as a seasonal NPS ranger in Yosemite and Yellowstone. Despite my mostly good experience, though, I recall well the occasional miscreant who ruined the good work of the majority.

I formed my own personal opinion that the best way to go from the start is on deeded ground n-e-a-r the BLM, NPS or USFS attraction. It seems to me then that you only have local elected officials to contend with instead of federal. Since I work for a major elected county official, I know the others very well.

I combat cynicism every single day on the job - and almost always win - but I cannot avoid the conclusion that the federal agencies don't make good neighbors.

My best wishes to the Swanlady.
