4X4 Route Ratings

1 - High clearance 2WD w/off road tires

2 - Stock 4WD w/off road tires; low range may be helpful

3 - High Clearance or Modified 4WD; low range required

4 - Generally impassable; winch and/or lockers required

The above route ratings are based on normal conditions. Severe storms, however, can occur at any time of year and can render even the easiest backcountry route impassable. Such conditions can include unusually deep sand, water, mud, and severe washouts. Be sure to check with the Park Service for current backcountry route conditions beforehand.
