I believe the Desert Protection Act was good for the desert. Yes, I grit my teeth everytime I go into Saline Valley and see the NPS signs. And the Rangers can be full of themselves at times. I also think what the desert could become without protection.

I also know, under protection, some areas can blossom. More than once, in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, where you need a permit to take a s#*t, a place that makes the Death Valley administration look wide open, full grown Desert Bighorn sheep would walk through our camp on their way to somewhere else. Or Ring-Tail cats would raid the kitchen (cute, the first time, or if you're up at night and get to watch them).

Having said that, eternal vigilance for the defence of the desert is required. Rafters love and defend The Canyon, often against some hairbrain NPS scheme to "improve" the experience, "equalize" the access or "protect" the public, among such claptrap.
