I recommend a trip through Goler Wash to Sourdough Spring, then right just past the DVNP boundry for a stop at Barker Ranch, infamous as Charles Manson's last hideout. On the way south on Ballarat Road, you will pass a heap leach gold mining operation that produces 90,000+ ounces of bullion annually. If time allows, and you like a more challenging 4X4 experience, continue from Sourdough Spring over Mengle Pass and into Butte Valley for a stop at the Geologist's Cabin near Anvil Spring. The view of Striped Butte is awe inspiring. This trip would take you past several mining camps and old buildings to explore.
