Welcome Arthur,
I have a feeling you may be picking the wrong time of year to get your first impression of Death Valley.Highs by the end of this week are expected to be 112. Are you sure of your wife's reaction when you step out of the a/c of your car out into the mid day heat of Death Valley.
If you go now just remember it is not always a hot dry dusty place.Try it again in the Spring or Winter.
Get yourself a Death Valley Road Map and stick to it.Although you will not see even half of the park in a car You should find plenty to see from your car by just staying on the paved roads.(Ubuhebe,Furnace Creek,Badwater, don't forget areas like Beatty, Shoesone (museum),D.V. junction, Trona (museum),etc).I am sure you will see posts from many people with ideas for you.
Panamint Springs is a great place to stay.Don't even look into staying somewhere else.(at least not this trip)
Don't forget to make sure your car is in good mechanical order before heading out and leave a itinerary with someone,Pack spare gas and water in the trunk ,make sure the spare tire still holds air,and by all means don't forget the camera.
Have fun on the trip and let us know how your first adventure in Death Valley was when you get back.
Happy Trails
Charles
