Big Foot,
According to the article in California Geology Nelsons Landing was in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the time of the flood and was administered by the National Park Service. What the status is today I don’t know.
From the article: “Bucket measurements of precipitation made by the National Weather Service indicate that the rainfall above Nelson was about 2 inches, increased to 2.5 inches at Nelson and, farther eastward toward Nelsons Landing, reached 3 inches or more.” Maybe you can help me here, does this mean that buckets are place over a wide area to measure rainfall from storms of the type that devastated Nelsons landing. An attempt is made in the article to calculate the “cross-sectional area of the total water front…” And they conclude: “Considering the numerous unknowns variables inherent in this calculation the maximum water depth probably ranged somewhere between 20 feet and 30 feet at the narrowest point in the channel.” That must have been quite a sight
I suspect that one third of an inch of rain for the event in Death Valley is not a very firm number.
