The only way to prevent heat illness is to begin to consume liquids long before you begin your given physical activity during the heat. Remember, it takes time for the water to get into your system so drink water constantly. For example, if you are going on a hike in the afternoon/evening, begin drinking copius amounts of water the minute you wake up. Drink water all throughout the day and don't wait til you start your outdoor activity. Again, the key to avoiding heatstroke is too have water fully absorbed in your body throughout the duration of your activity.

Since some have mentioned gatorade, I will tell my trick for using that. Try dilluting it by pouring half of it in water, so you have a mix of 50 percent H2O and 50 percent gatorade. This mix doesn't taste as good as pure gatorade but it is smarter and is a trick used by many professional atheletes, especially cyclists.
