Steve,
I would suspect the temperatures are skewered at both ends of the 24 hour period. Something to do with the specific heat of the wood as opposed to the ambient air temperature's. You may be interested in this: my friend in the Panamint Valley keeps a thermometer in a gallon jug of water placed in the shade, a low-tech way of averaging the temperature. If you ever get to Ballarat have a talk with Louie, he keeps very good weather records and would, I'm sure, enjoy talking to a pro. Louie has around nine thermometers at his place and one of his discoveries is the remarkable affect a very (I mean very small)small amount of greenery has on the temperature in the greenery's local.
