Another Panamint Valley resident alerted me to another neat temperature phemom. During early evening in September, when driving from Panamint Valley to Furnace Creek, we witnessed the outdoor temperature drop ten degrees when driving through the Devil's Cornfield, an area thick in arrowweed plants.

He claims this is a normal occurance. I haven't been back there with a vehicle with a built-in thermometer since for a second observation.

Could these cooler temps have been one reason that the Jayhawker's camped near the Devil's Cornfield during their 1849 escape from Death Valley?
