I've had that happen many time. I desert travel solo, I use "solo travel, rules" instead of "travel with others, rules" for safety sake. But I enjoye solo trips just as much as group trips. I feel you need to travel the desert in all conditions (seasons, weather, etc.) to really enjoy it. So I'd wouldn't say going to Mesquite Spring campground next weekend is anything but normal, I think the people who found something else to do need help.
But rememeber, I'm someone who works for an airlines, can fly almost anywhere in the world, and I choose to go to DV on vacation. It's good to know who you get advice from. Ha Ha
