There are some very remote parts of the park, and the desert at it's mightiest is imposing. Think how all those folks who came throught without air conditioning, or even cars, must have been affected. Then try changing a car tire on the Saline Valley Road at 126 degrees in the shade, only there is no shade! (Done this a few too many times). For a first time visitor I wouldn't recommend this of course, stick to the trails, see the sights. But there is a lot more to it than that, down some of the dusty trails. You also meet some pretty amazing people out in the desert, a lot who, for one reason or another, don't quite fit into the world outside it. P
