Undoubtedly the author meant Panamint. I have two guesses: 1.) the author was writing quite early in the history of the area -- 1850 thru early 1900's, and not recognizing the name "Panamint", because it is a combination of the words "pan a mint", which of course is what you could do there..."pan a mint" of money. 2.)Second guess is that the author is recent and he/she ran a spell check and didn't catch the change from Panamint to Paramount. The two words look very similar at first glance.
Them's my guesses, at any rate. Care to share the reference where you found this information?
