Best places to stay/road conditions

Usually a summer visitor who stays at Furnace Creek Ranch, does anybody have any feelings as to which is nicer place to stay, Panamint Springs or Stovepipe Wells accomodations?
Also, re: Panamint, coming in from the 190 or from the 178, how are the roads - usually come in from the 127 thru shoshone. Don't have four wheel drive.
