I use a Garmin GPS on the trail, wheather that be on a hike or in the truck. I like to use topo maps that i have printed ahead of time in conjunction with the GPS on a hike.
Often when i am driving, i hook the GPS up to the laptop for navigation. It helps to have someone as the navigator.
I also use the Forest Service maps and, occasionally the BLM maps.
Of course, when you are going back to a place you are familiar with, you toss all of that to the wind, and just go.
