I was in Death Valley shortly after "Selective Availability" was removed from the GPS system. My Garmin 12XL would usually show the Estimated Position Error as at least 70 feet. I stepped out of our room at Stovepipe, turned on the GPS, and was astonished to see an EPS of 14 feet!
In addition to the 12XL, I always carry custom maps printed by Topo! software and, of course, a compass.
