Road conditions

Hi, we need some help getting information about the roads in Death Valley. This will be our first trip and we will be coming from Las Vegas in a rental car that does not have four wheel drive. We are planning to stay at Furnace Creek Ranch from Jan.8-12th. Will there be any difficulty in getting there, because of the storms and snow? If we plan to take moderate hikes, not backcountry, do we need hiking boots or are good running shoes sufficient? OUr boots are heavy and we are concerned about weight when flying.
We want to visit Scotty's Castle and the Badwater area. Our biggest question is should we rent a SUV instead of a sedan to get around in the park. Thanks for any help. Rose
