Rose, If you plan to stay on the pavement, and gravel roads, a sedan should do fine. If you plan to venture off the main roads, then consider an SUV.
As far as hiking....I guess that's an individual thing, but I myself would never hike in running shoes, as I don't feel they give the proper support needed, even for short distances. Straight walking maybe, but in DV you will likely be climbing a bit, and walking in loose shale, so I would choose the boots.
