Burro Schmidt, confuses me

If Toni bought the tunnel in Bakersfield at a sherriff's sale, I am confused. I know land can be sold at Sherriffs sales, but are mining claims sold at them also? I've never heard of this. Doesn't that mean she held the deed to the land not just mining claims?
