The ascent up the western side of the Inyos is very steep; I'm lucky to go 45mph in my 4-runner, and that's working the engine. Watch your speed coming down, too, because there's some long fast straight stretches which terminate in 10mph curves. I don't think snow is a problem, except during and immediately after a big storm, but I'm not a local. A detour north or south off this road and up the surrounding slopes will eventually bring you to awesome views of the Sierras. The views from the road itself are "filtered."

Nice Joshua tree forest on the eastern side and summit area. If hiking is your thing, I've always wanted to hike down marble canyon to the Dunes, but be prepared for an epic hike. Also, I bet there's some great views from the ridge south of Deep Springs valley, but I haven't been there (yet).

If you camp near the Dunes, walk around Dedeckera Cyn. Cool rocks.
