A friend had the exact same problem with a first generation Dodge Dakota, so it's a problem that's likely to plague any vehicle in these modern times.
I had a '96 Chevy S-10 4x4 truck that I put 150,000 trouble free miles on in the outback. Traded it in on my current '02 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 w/TRD package. I'm not particularly proactive as far as vehicle maintenance except oil. I just hop in and drive where I want to go.
